OMBUDSMAN. W HAT
HAPPENS IN NURSING HOMES?
Imagine
being alone, often confused, and without control over your
medical care, property, or even your daily routine. It’s a
terrifying thought, but it happens every day, probably to
someone you know, maybe to someone you love.
And it could happen to you.
In this new book, the author describes in
detail 26 of the hundreds of complaints she investigated in
northwest Florida while serving on the federally-mandated
Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council, and explains how they were
resolved - and why some couldn’t be resolved. In
these true cases, the names of the residents and the
facilities have been changed to protect their privacy.
This is a vignette of life in long term care
facilities and the often insurmountable problems faced by
the only group that represents the residents. Florida’s
volunteer ombudsmen effectively represented approximately
50,000 elders, or about 31 percent of the state’s 163,000
long-term care residents in the fiscal year 2005-2006.
JUSTICE DENIED: T HE
DESTRUCTION OF THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF THE HE-COON.
The “He-Coon” is
former U. S. Congressman Bob Sikes, once the most powerful
figure in Florida’s Panhandle, now a name on a bridge, an
airport, a library.
The author returns to bury her father and
learns that he died of malnutrition and dehydration; that
she and her family have been maligned and their estate
stolen by two young women. At the onset of his long bout
with Alzheimer’s disease, Bob Sikes married his third,
much younger wife. By the time he died, she had transferred
everything he owned into her name with the help of her
sister, as well as Bob Sikes’ secretary, and his doctor
(now a state senator), and the town mayor.
During a decade of court battles, the
children and grandchildren of Bob Sikes learned that despite
documentation of evidence, records, and perjury, despite
legal precedents and statutes, justicefollows political
connections and deep pockets .
For families of the vulnerable elderly, and
anyone who believes that justice is blind. This true story
is documented by legal, court and medical records. No names
have been changed. Second
edition, published March, 2007.
LOST LAMBS and BLACK SHEEP. P ARALLEL
LIVES.
Lessons learned by a
lonely child and the (mis)interpretations of life’s
lessons by a standalone adult. The reader will find an
engaging collection of true and
fictitious short
stories: Humorous, poignant and sometimes dark tales about
parents and children, love and sex, death and hunters,
horses and thieves, and getting old before you’ve
perfected being young. |
