The Free Woman

Carol Malt

Carol Malt, Ph.D. is a Fulbright Senior Scholar, teaches museology and a course on "Women in the Muslim World" at the University of Florida.  She has been the Executive Director of three art museums and curator of numerous exhibitions.  She has lived in the Middle East, participated with Sir Edmund Hillary in a camel trek across northern India, is an Explorers Club member and a private pilot.

Malt's book The Free Woman portrays the inferior role of women in Islamic society and the heroic deeds of one who dared escape its confines.  Malt gleaned much of this story from little known records furnished by a Professor of History at the University of Tetouan, Dr. Benaboud.  The Free Woman is a vivid portrayal of the struggle for identity of a young Berber woman and her remarkable impact on religious and cultural clashes that today still prevail in Islamic countries.
