Sarah
Smiley is the author of "Shore Duty," a syndicated
column for and about military spouses. She is the
wife of a Navy flight instructor.
Sarah has been a Navy dependent for 27 years. She is the
daughter of RDML Lindell Rutherford (USN, Ret.) of
Norfolk, VA, and spent most of her upbringing amid
aircraft carriers and Navy bases in Virginia Beach,
Virginia. As a Navy daughter and spouse, Sarah is in a

a special appeal to military wives who identify with her
lifestyle, but has reached the hearts of women and
families everywhere.
Sarah's accomplishments include: self-syndicating her
column nationally; writing as "Special Contributor" for
JaxAirNews (NAS Jacksonville, FL); serving as Public
Relations Chairperson for Pensacola Mardi Gras, Inc.;
appearing as a guest speaker for military events;
promoting spouse events on local television; producing a
monthly newsletter for the VT-2 training squadron's
spouse club in Milton, FL; and serving as Assistant to
the Editor for a community paper in St. John's County,
FL.
Sarah has served as President and Vice President for an
Officer's Spouse club in Jacksonville, FL. She is a
graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, AL.
